What to look for when buying a one cup coffee machine

The idea of these machines is pretty simple… Make one cup of coffee! But there are a few things that set some of the models apart from each other including how the coffee is made, easiness of cleanup, time to brew and overall quality, amongst other things.

Here’s a rundown of some of the main things you should look at when researching your next purchase.

What type of coffee do you put into it?

Single serve machines make coffee in a variety of ways. Many will have their own proprietary capsule systems, such as Keurig’s “K-Cup” capsules, or the famous Nespresso capsules. On the other hand, some might take regular coffee grounds.

When choosing, it’s important to know what type of coffee yours will use and to make sure you have an easy way to stock up on that type, since some might not be available in the places you go shopping.

How easy is it to clean?

This is often something that gets overlooked by people when purchasing a new coffee machine, but it’s an important consideration especially for single serve machines. You don’t want to be cleaning the thing up for 5 minutes after every cup especially if there are going to be a steady stream of people using it.

How fast does it make your coffee?

Not all coffee machines make coffee in the same amount of time. Even though the brewing time should in theory be reasonably similar, more powerful machines will be able to heat water up quicker before brewing thus reducing the overall time taken to produce your cup. Some other specifications may also impact the overall time so remember to take note of any such features when doing your research.

Overall quality

What I’m talking about here is really two things… The quality of the coffee and the build quality of the machine.

Whilst you won’t be able to test out how the coffee tastes when buying a machine online you will have access to many many customer testimonials that will give you a good idea of what machines produce the best flavour.

Build quality is also important if you are going to make regular use of your coffee machine since you’ll most likely want it to last a long time! For this reason, it’s best to stick with the major and trusted brands. Many will also carry a warranty to give you that extra peace of mind.
