Nespresso CitiZ Automatic Espresso Maker Review

Posted on 12. Mar, 2013 by in Product Reviews

We haven’t reviewed many of the Nespresso type machines here on Coffee Lovers 101, so we thought it was about time.

These Nespresso machines are the pinnacle class and sophistication when it comes to image, but does the Nespresso CitiZ Automatic actually make good coffee?

Let’s find out…

[easyazon-image align=”right” asin=”B002NGNHBS” locale=”us” height=”250″ src=”” width=”208″]The CitiZ comes in Limousine Black and Silver Chrome, depending on your personal preference and it uses the patented Nespresso capsules.

Nespresso capsules are different to the usual “pods” in one very important way. If you aren’t familiar with what Pods are, imagine a perforated sack, like a tea bag, which contains ground coffee instead of tea. They are very convenient but the clear downside to these pods is that as soon as the seal on the packaging is broken, all the pods will begin to go stale and there’s nothing worse than stale ground coffee.

The difference with Nespresso capsules is that they are each individually foil-sealed. This allows them to maintain their freshness for much much longer, so no matter whether you drink only one coffee a week or are burning through 3 or 4 cups a day, each one should be just as fresh as the last.

The main selling point of this Nespresso machine is that it’s precision coffee making. From the capsules to the brewing, everything is completely repeatable and guarantees that every coffee you make will have the exact same great taste.

It doesn’t just make espresso shots. This model comes with what they call an “aeroccino”, which is their posh way of saying “automatic milk frother”. The way it works is this; first you fill the aeroccino with milk and turn it on. After it automatically creates a cup of steamed frothy milk, you then place it under the espresso making part of the machine and let it pour a shot into the milk.

So it’s not quite a fully automatic machine, but you don’t actually have to steam the milk yourself – something which a lot of you out there will be thankful for we are sure.

The technical specs, like it’s 19 bar pump for example, are not really as important as they would be for other espresso machines. You can’t really compare because the different method this machine uses to brew (capsules) requires a different specification. So whilst a 19 bar pump looks good and beats most other espresso machines on paper, it’s not really a fair comparison.

What others say

It’s almost unheard of for a coffee machine to get such high ratings, but across a various range of online stores the Nespresso CitiZ Automatic has an average rating from customers of around 4.7 out of 5!

We have collected some data from a number of online customer reviews to summarise the general opinions here:

Whilst everyone seems to love the machine for its ease of use and it’s amazing tasting coffee (many have compared it to classic Italian coffee), the only real complaints people have had is that the frother can become faulty from time to time. Given that the people who haven mentioned this seem to be people who use the machine extensively, many times per day, you might suppose that it can be expected that something like a frother can become faulty and you should consider this when deciding whether to buy it or not.

Who should buy the Nespresso Citiz?

The Nespresso CitiZ is perfectly suited to those of you who want to create really great coffee, quickly and easily without worrying about the process. You just want to hit a couple of buttons and have your drink ready within a minute or two – and you want it to look good in the process.

It would also make an amazing gift for someone who perhaps is new to making coffee at home and you want to treat them to a way of making classic coffee without worrying that it’s too technical for them.
