Amazon ImageThe De’Longhi BAR32 Retro 15 BAR Pump Espresso and Cappuccino Maker is an easy to use pod or ground coffee espresso maker with a built-in jet frother that allows you to steam your milk for a quick and easy latte or cappuccino any time.

At under $100 you’re not going to be getting cafe quality, but what you do get is a quick and easy way to grab a coffee when you’re in a rush and need a quick caffeine hit.

For what it is, the BAR32 is a good little machine and is popular among its users.

Features

Believe it or not, this machine has a really cool feature that is not seen in a number of models twice its price. The feature we are talking about is a dual thermostat. Having this allows the temperature of the water going into your coffee and the water that goes to the steam wand to be controlled separately, so that they can both be at the right temperature exactly when they need to be.

Machines that only have one thermostat force you to wait in between frothing your milk and pulling your espresso for the temperature of the water to change depending on what job you are doing.

It does have a 15 bar pump, which is ideal for great espresso.

What’s missing?

The main thing that might turn you off buying this machine is the lack of control. It’s pretty much a set-and-forget operation when it comes to making the espresso. That said, you still need to manually froth your milk so its not totally automatic.

What others say

The general consensus among users who have reviewed this product online is that it is a great value for money. Other points that were raised include:

  • It creates a satisfactory crema
  • Pods are convenient and can be made by any company (not locked into De ‘Longhi pods) but can get expensive
  • Steam wand is a little cramped but still easy to use
  • Most of the negative reviews have been concerning it becoming faulty in time. Others have claimed that people just don’t look after it properly and that is to blame
  • Customer support can be lacking
  • For beginners this definitely seems to be a great choice

What we think

Any coffee machine that costs under $100 is going to have a number of compromises in terms of build quality and the De’Longhi BAR32 Retro is no different. It’s not going to look and feel like a professional level machine, but as long as you don’t expect it to then you should be very happy with it.

If you head over to Amazon  to check out all the hundreds of customer reviews then just keep in mind that for this price you are getting good value for money and that the problems people are having with the machine can be found with most espresso makers in the same price range.

If the price really is your limiting factor, then this is still a really great buy.
