BUNN ST Velocity Brew 10-Cup Thermal Carafe Home Coffee Brewer Review

TheĀ BUNN ST Velocity Brew 10-Cup Thermal Carafe Home Coffee Brewer has a really strong reputation online as a solid and sleek coffee maker. It’s features a thermal carafe designed to keep your coffee warm without needing a heating plate and it uses a stainless steel hot water tank for quick brewing.

It will make coffee in no more than 4 minutes which guarantees a smooth, non-bitter taste from over extraction. It also comes with a 3 year manufacturers warranty which is pretty good these days.

It has an average rating of over 4 out of 5 from various online retailers customer reviews, so it is clearly liked by a lot of people, but just from looking at how this thing works we feel it important to let you know about one major factor in the way that it works:

Important To Know

[easyazon-image align=”right” asin=”B002AKKCLK” locale=”us” height=”160″ src=”http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31k66iGQKaL._SL160_.jpg” width=”138″]The machines documentation and advertising claims that you can brew coffee in 4 minutes and this is true to some extent. What is not so clear is that it’s only that quick because it’s water tank is constantly turned on and the water is always at the correct temperature… Yes, you read that right – the water is always hot! So if you only drink the odd cup of coffee here and there then you are either going to have to keep it turned off most of the time and then wait the 15 minutes or so for the water to actually heat up every time you use it, or you will want to give this one a miss.

Maybe this is a feature better used in an office or busy home where coffee is always on the go, with cups being poured throughout the day before the machine is then turned off at night. With that said, the carafe only holds 10 cups at most which translates to 2 mugs – so if you’re drinking a lot of coffee then you might need something a bit bigger anyway.

What Others Say

Even with the problem that I stated above, this machine is a very popular choice and highly rated for the coffee it produces so it obviously has a market.

Here is a summary of some of the comments others have had about this machine:

The Good:

  • Coffee tastes great – even better if you replace the standard paper filter with a gold-tone filter
  • Beautiful design
  • Straight forward and easy to use
  • Coffee does stay warm for much longer if you pre-heat the carafe by filling it with hot water for a couple of minutes before putting your coffee in it
  • Really quick brew

The Bad:

  • The carafe can be a bit drippy and you will need to take the lid off to get the last few drops out
  • If you buy one and its producing weak coffee you might have a defective spray head, in which case Bunn will send you a replacement (which is easy to fit yourself)
  • Need to use more grounds to achieve a good strong flavour compared to other types of machine

Overall it looks like this machine does have its place, as there are bound to be folks out there who won’t mind having it turned on with the water constantly hot all day long. If that is you, then theĀ BUNN ST Velocity Brew could well be the right choice for you.
