The Good:

  • Unparalleled programmability
  • Grind and brew is tailored to a cup, travel mug or carafe by using the best coffee to water ratio for each volume
  • 7 Strength and 5 steeping time settings
  • In-built burr grinder
  • Choose between the included gold-tone coffee filter and your own paper filters
  • Pre-grind your beans or let the machine do it for you right before brewing

The Bad:

  • This is a very large coffee maker at 9 x 14 x 16.2 inches
  • It is one of the more expensive models on the market
  • Coffee won’t be as hot if you don’t pre-heat the thermal carafe
  • You can’t see how much coffee is left in the carafe
  • Burr grinder is NOT adjustable

Bottom Line:

A top quality grind and brew coffee maker with heaps of features and options for tweaking your coffee to taste. The Breville BDC600XL received 4 out of 5 stars from customer reviews on Amazon so even at the higher end of the price range it is still good value for money.

Breville BDC600XL YouBrew Drip Coffee Maker Review

The Breville YouBrew comes with all the options to let you customise your perfect cup of coffee. Adjust the steeping and strength settings to alter how much coffee is used and how long it is brewed for until you hit your mark and then just save those settings to make the same great tasting cup every time.

The thermal carafe can be used to keep your coffee warm for much longer than otherwise possible and doesn’t need to be warmed by a heating plate which can spoil the taste of your coffee. You can also brew straight into your single coffee mug or travel mug if making coffee just for one and the machine will adjust the brew to suit each one.

The machine uses the correct amount of water for each brew meaning that you can just ensure that the reservoir is kept full and not have to worry about measuring it out every time.

The unit has a built in burr grinder which will produce a consistent grind each time, however it is not adjustable so your grind will always be the same. The flavour and strength variables are controlled by steeping time and the amount of coffee used.

Who Should Buy The Breville YouBrew?

Whilst the connoisseur might not appreciate the lack of an adjustable grinder, for most other folks this shouldn’t be a problem. There are enough settings available for the majority of people to tailor their preferred cup of coffee, which makes this a great purchase for anyone who really wants a grind-and-brew coffee maker and is not restricted by budget or kitchen counter space.

This is a large unit and anyone considering buying it should make sure that they have somewhere to put it before making the purchase.

It is a much more controllable coffee maker than other cheaper models so if you are looking for a great machine that will produce consistently good coffee every time and you have the money to lay down, then you should seriously consider the Breville YouBrew.

What are the Alternatives?

The Breville YouBrew is an excellent piece of equipment that is sure to keep most coffee lovers happy with a gorgeous brew each morning. It’s large size should not be enough to put anyone off and if you are serious about your drip coffee then you should not need to be concerned with the above-average price. There is one, great alternative however which has one main advantage:

The Technivorm Moccamaster Coffee Maker is very similar in capability to the Breville, but it’s one big advantage is that it has a copper heating element for the water. The benefit of this is that it can bring the water up to temperature much quicker and keeps it consistent for the entire brewing time resulting in the best possible brew.

The Technivorm is not actually a grind and brew however, it only brews so you will need to grind your beans separately. Depending on your own personality and preferences this may be an advantage or a disadvantage. Grinding your beans separately will give you full control, but it will also mean you need a second device in your kitchen.
