Breville Barista Express BES860XL Machine with Grinder Review

Posted on 25. Aug, 2012 by in Product Reviews

Amazon ImageThe Breville Barista Express BES860XL Machine is a great mid-priced automatic espresso machine with rave reviews online averaging a score of 4.6 out of 5 on a number of retail websites.

It has an integrated conical burr grinder and water filter and you can create your coffee manually or by using the programmable functions.

It is not a “super-automatic” espresso machine because you still need to load the portafilter onto the machine and clean it afterwards, but it is just about as automatic as anyone would want whilst still retaining a level of control over how their coffee is made.

Lets take a look at some of the Breville Barista Express BES860XL Machine’s main features now.

Features of the Breville Barista Express

  • Uses 15 bars of pressure to brew your espresso shot
  • Has a built in conical burr grinder which delivers the correct dosage every time for perfect consistency from cup to cup
  • Takes less than two minutes from start to finish to create an espresso with a delicious thick crema
  • Use single or dual walled filters depending on how much control you want to have over your grind etc
  • Steam wand to produce perfectly frothed milk. Includes an attachment if more froth is required
  • Really easy to clean
  • Puck is virtually dry when finished making for really easy cleaning between shots

What other say

We’ve done some research into the experiences people are sharing online with this coffee machine and collected the best bits below:

The Good:

  • Makes espresso so good that it “doesn’t need sweetener”
  • Very solid construction and feels long lasting
  • Lots of cool little features, like a hidden drawer for the little bits and pieces that come with it and a magnetic tamper that you can use either on the counter (like the baristas do) or on the side of the machine
  • Steam pressure and temperature is top notch
  • People love the quality of the integrated burr grinder
  • Easy to program
  • Looks very sleek and sexy

The Bad:

It’s a struggle to find anyone with something bad to say about this machine (at least that seems credible) but this is what we came up with:

  • There is no hot water spout (for americano drinkers) so you have to boil water separately
  • One or two people have ended up returning theirs due to faults, but it sounds to us like they need to follow their cleaning and maintenance instructions properly

Summary

It has been suggested that this espresso machine is a great option for coffee lovers looking for a reliable and convenient way to create their favourite espresso based drink without much fuss, but that the hardcore barista looking for ultimate control may be better off looking at alternatives such as the Silvia Rancilio Espresso Machine.

We think there is very little between them though and highly recommend the Breville, so for the best price on this machine now please click the link below.
