Let’s dive straight into some of the features that make this one of the more expensive home burr grinders on the market.

  • It’s commercial grade conical burr system ensures that the grind process does not heat up your coffee beans (and therefore release flavour too early). Less expensive burr grinders are known to transfer heat from the burrs into the coffee grind.
  • This grinder features a Pulse button for precise grinding amounts.
  • This grinder takes fine-tuned grinding to another level with 440 steps of adjustment between fine and coarse.
  • An integrated thermal safety device on the motor ensures that it knows when to turn itself off and prolong its life if it’s beginning to overheat.
  • If you live in the US or Canada and the grinder becomes faulty within the 1 year warranty period, Baratza will deliver a new one to your door and arrange for pickup of your faulty one free of charge

In terms of features, it really does seem like the Baratza has got it covered with all that you could ask for from a burr grinder that is designed for the home.

If we are honest, 440 levels of adjustment is really over the top for 99% of us who are just casual coffee drinkers and need nowhere near that level of accuracy. However it does help to illustrate how well the grinder is put together and acts as an n indication of the overall build quality of the unit, that it can go to such ridiculous detail.

Now, this is by no means the most expensive grinder available, but for the average folk who just enjoy making a couple of coffees at home during the day either in their french press, drip machine or espresso machine, it is towards the upper end of how much you might be able to justify to yourself paying.

What’s the difference between this grinder and a $100 grinder?

You’re probably asking yourself why you would pay this much for a grinder when there are really good ones available for around $100, so lets take a look at what you get for your extra money.

  • Even better and more consistent grind (as demonstrated by the levels of adjustment available)
  • Static is reduced to a minimum
  • Excellent grounds retention, meaning that very little coffee is kept around inside the burr mechanism between grinds. Many other grinders can leave half ground and fully ground coffee inside the machine between uses, the Baratza does not suffer from this to the same extent
  • Low heat transfer from burrs into beans
  • Build quality it much higher

It is clear that this burr grinder is a step up from most consumer grinders and for that you will be getting an excellent quality grind.

It is recommended to invest in a grinder of this level and upwards if you consider yourself a connoisseur of coffee and can appreciate the fine differences between each single cup of coffee that you make. That, or if you just like to have the best things 😉
